two eyes of blue

When you come face to face with your own mortality, a crystal clear understanding of what, and who truly matters comes into sharp focus. This is what happened to me on that January day in 2019 when I was diagnosed with a rare Head and Neck cancer called Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the minor salivary glands.Life has never been the same since.

My wonderful surgeon Professor Leo Stassen met me prior to my radical surgery, outlining to me the monumental road ahead. “Have you got any questions Síle ?” he asked. I said “yes, but it’s a stupid one”. “There’s no such thing as a stupid question here ” he replied. I asked “will I ever sing again?”. I was told that I would be lucky to speak again, let alone sing, unfortunately. Something died inside that day.

Two Eyes Of Blue is a love song for all those I adore. It’s ultimately written for, and about,my gorgeous children, Doireann and Morgan, and how privileged I have been to know such precious human beings.I have been besotted by you both since the first moment I looked into those eyes of blue.

I dedicate the song to Gerry, who has walked each and every step of this journey with me since January 31st 2019. The colour of the eyes that you look into or of those that look back into yours doesn’t matter as long as they’re soft and loving, and staring right back at you!

Mam, Mary, Sinéad and Martin, you too have travelled this tough and lonely road with me. You are, each and every one, simply the best.

But life is for living. Life is for loving those truly special people who share life’s journey with you.I have learnt that there is nothing like a crisis to separate the wheat from the chaff. There has been nothing like my illness to discern the wholesome few from the very many pretenders. Thank you Lynda Martin, my steadfast friend. Thank you Jimmy Murray, my spiritual support and guide. Thank you Carmel Daly Reams for your endless effervescence!

Two Eyes Of Blue is written from the heart to the hearts of the best. To Professor Stassen, to Dr. Paul Kielty, to each and every angel on Anne Young ward in St. James Hospital, Dublin, I thank you. To the kind and generous people at St. Lukes in Rathgar. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

To each and every person who has been touched by cancer, I hope that this song might bring some measure of hope, some measure of strength in order to believe that tomorrow might bring a little more ease, a little more healing. I hope that my story might highlight that though we may be changed utterly from that which we were before this cruel disease took hold, we can still show the world that there is so much left to give. I still have so much more to say. My voice may be diminished, but my heart and soul are not.

I send my heartfelt good wishes to everyone who supports this cause and I thank you sincerely.
